| Poorly dressed people | |
| I noticed that if you really look around. My feeling is that around when you are in IFC or at Orchard rd 90% of all people are really poorly dressed. I can't see why people go out and spend money (and not necessarily small amounts) on ugly clothes. Is there any particular reason for that? I mean, you can go to H&M or Zara and buy some stuff and still look much more fashionable than 90% of the asian population. Please give me an explanation to this phenomenon? |

I think it's because of your way of looking at fashion and the way that you think fashion should be.
I am sure that 90% of the people you are talking about think that your fashion is really ugly to |

Cookie cutter gweilo shops like H&M and Zara might have some pretty decent cheap clothes (usually made in some Asian sweatshop so its affordable for you and I), but try not to slag off a whole continents dress sense just because we live in an ethnocentric Westernized media-driven society. Unless you are just silly and flippant, of course... also have you been to the States recently? It ain't no catwalk either, my dear |

But to say that 90% of the Asian population....thats not to bad! So only in China approximately 130 million people in China dress fashionable !?! My god! They must be amazing dressed over there, Karen buy me a airline ticket NOW ! ! ! |

Im sured 90% of the population that you think dress's ugly most prob think the same about you
besides, just the fact that you think those cheap clothes hanging in H&M and Zara is so much better than the really expensive clothes these IFC'ers are wearing (most probably from shops like Lane Crawford and Zegna) shows how much fashion sense you've got |

I know Orchard Road well. And the general dress sense both there and elsewhere in Asia. What the hell does "really poorly dressed mean"? I am racially European, and I find Asia a welcome relief from the sartorial snottiness and pretentious brand awareness prevalent in Europe. But of course, your are probably intent on provoking a reaction. I've seen this overdeveloped European (racially and geographically) sartorial ostentation where teenagers (who do not know better) and adults (who should know better, but often don't) compete for status by observing certain codes of dress. Give me Asia any day.
I would take your comments more seriously if you were more specfiic. But you aren't. I could be wrong, but you write like a self-important mem sahib, a throwback to another age. I hope I am wrong. |

| From: Sindy Posted: 4th of September at 4:23 pm | Report | Ok people, yes, Karen said some really silly things. And I am sure by now she is sorry about that. But there is a point in this stream which I think no one has stated clearly. Our friend from Europe states that he is happy to get away from the "sartorial snottiness and pretentious brand awareness prevalent in Europe." I have never in my life and all of my travels seen any society more brand aware than I have in Asia (along with all the snottiness and pretentiousness to go along with it). Brand loyalty here takes on a whole new meaning, and let's face it, sometimes an ugly one. And of course, fashion sense is not only personal but cultural and we are all entitled to our own opinions.
But while I am here, can someone PLEASE explain the flesh colored, ankle high nylons so prevalent in the mainland? After many years of witnessing the phenomena, the thought process that goes into women donning them all summer with sandals still escapes me. Enlighten me! |
