A woodpecker’s insistent tapping was our wake-up call. As we strolled onto the beach fronting our rooms, a white-crested Brahmini kite circled above the Senari Straits. Later in the day, we spotted Oriental Pied hornbills, Eurasian otters, and a monitor lizard. A member of the prestigious Taj Group, the Rebak Island Resort lives up to its reputation for legendary luxury, hospitality, and premier recreational facilities. Hugging the south-western coast of Langkawi, 390-acre Pulau Rebak Besar is one of three inhabited islands of the ninety-nine that constitute the Langkawi Archipelago. Natural fibres and timber are used throughout the lobby and villas, reminiscent of kampong (village) huts. Contemporary interiors are complemented by the lush tropical landscape designed by Made Wijaya. The rustic charm translates into the island’s name, which is derived from a native tree. Another explanation is that the island’s shape resembles the traditional Malay 'rebak' or drum. The resort’s strategic location is a veritable paradise for adventure seekers. Imposing natural rock formations, picturesque waterfalls, pristine white sands, and secluded caves form the natural landscape. Crystal clear waters and exotic marine life offer an unparalleled underwater experience. You’re spoilt for choice with a host of leisure activities including diving, kayaking, parasailing, wind-surfing, and water-skiing. Try something new every day or island hop. Our last day was highlighted by a calming Malaysian Classical toe-to-head massage. Meals at the all-day Senari are a sensory and gastronomic pleasure, commencing with a substantially impressive breakfast which include Executive Sous Chef Wong’s special in-house breads and fresh vegetable-fruit juice. The al-fresco dining has an impressive array of Oriental, Indian, and Continental delicacies. Malay fishing baskets transformed into pendant lights evoke a quaint ambience. If you are looking to dress up for an evening of chic cocktails and lounge music, make your way to SY 69, a stylish contemporary bar with a view of the Marina and yachts. One evening, we indulged in a romantic (candle-lit) dinner under a moonlit sky on the beach. It was a night to remember with sand beneath our feet and the sea lapping in the distance. Chef Dinesh conjured up a mouthwatering menu of delights. Post-dinner live music by the two-member band, Flamenco, near the flame-coloured Minum-Minum bar pulled guests to the dance floor. The Rebak Island Resort offers the perfect respite from hectic city life. Ideal for a weekend getaway, lose yourself in the whispering waves, invigorating tropical landscape, and unwind in your very own island paradise.
