The whole nine yards - The latest hotel crews satisfying your every whim

First it was a bath butler, then it was a pillow menu – and now its staff with the most specific – and unusual - of tasks. It could possibly be the height of luxury and extravagance, but hotels all around the world are determined to cater to your every whim.

When you check into London’s Claridges (www.claridges.co.uk), make sure to check out their water menu that mimics a wine list in variety. On this are more than 30 brands that you can choose from. The 420 Volcanic from New Zealand, for example, averages at HK$800 for a litre. Over at the Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt in Buenos Aires (www.parkhyattbuenosaires.com) there’s a cheese sommelier (called a maitre fromager) whose job is to oversee the cheese offerings.

Curious about your ancestors? No problem. Over at Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel (www.marriott.co.uk) is “genealogy butler” whose job will help you rediscover your Irish ancestors. He’ll give you a personalized assessment, suggested research programme, details of Dublin repositories and maps. And if your roots are Scottish, then the Sheraton Grand in Edinburgh (www.starwoodhotels.com) offers the same services.

But the most extreme is perhaps at the Ritz Carlton Moscow (www.ritzcarlton.com). They've got a technology butler just to help you make sense of all the gadgets in your bedroom, and (naturally) a vodka sommelier to help you sort through the 400 brands stocked in their Lobby Lounge bar – it’s said his palate is sensitive enough to distinguish every single one. Going clubbing? The Ritz also has what is called a “nightlife butler” whose job is to help you get through “face control” (i.e. door bitches) at the trendy nightclubs and so you can party with the Russian cognoscenti.
