“You don’t understand. It’s not a bag, it’s a Baguette!” Carrie Bradshaw's frantic pleas may have fallen on deaf ears, but fashionistas watched with bated breath as the mugger threatened to strip Carrie of her purple sequinned Baguette. Ten years ago, Fendi rode the "It Bag" wave with the Baguette. A long, skinny bag, the Baguette is meant to be tucked under your arm like the French loaf. Since 1997, the Fendi Baguette has wooed and wowed with its minimal shape and audacious colours and is back to celebrate its 10th anniversary. What’s different about the new Baguette? To ring in their anniversary, the Italian fashion house asked celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Kim Cattrall, and the Marchesa designers to customise Baguettes sold for US$2500 on www.eluxury.com with proceeds donated to selected charities. Similiarly, Fendi collaborated with twelve prominent Asian artistes including Camelia (Malaysian celebrity), Carina Lau (Chinese celebrity), Chen Ke (Chinese artist), Donna Ong (Singaporean installation artist), Fann Wong (Singaporean celebrity), Eason Chan (Hong Kong artist), Hathairat Charoenchaichana (Thai illustrator), Marina Ramlan (Malaysian artist), Wing Shya (Hong Kong photographer), Rick Chin (Japanese makeup artist) and Hye Young Lee (Korean celebrity). Lifestyle picks its top six Baguettes: The Colour of Happiness Carina Lau, Great China celebrity Carina Lau's inspiration springs from the cheerful colors of the 10+ collection and is adorned with spring blossoms for that extra zing. A Women’s Secret Wing Shya, Hong Kong photographer The photo transfer wash-off effect of the exterior spells understated chic, whilst the interior reveals secret snapshots. Colourful Memories, Young Girl Chen Ke, Chinese artist As seen in recent works, the artist tells a tale of sweet melancholy. Installation art and a special dye create a stunning 3D effect. The Emotion Hathairat Charoenchaichana, Thai illustrator Alter egos flavour this bag. The surface of the Baguette portrays two women amidst blooming spring flowers. However, the flap opens to reveal dark emotions, tears, and leafless trees. Fluidity and Movement Marini Ramlan, Malayia TV producer/artist Peacock feathers and butterfly wings garnish this Baguette. It is a metamorphosis of sorts, where the sparse peacock feathers dominate the exterior and bouquets grace the inner flap. Pretty Women By Rick Chin, Japanese make-up artist Using cosmetics instead of traditional colouring, Chin's Baguette is bursting with exuberance. Feeling creative? Fendi designer, Silvia Venturini Fendi launched a special edition white canvas Baguette. Available in Europe and the USA, the Baguette comes with 10 Pantone markers. Pick a colour (or ten) and let those creative juices flow.
